Mongrels are world champions
On the last weekend in August, Emmet, Morgan, Bouchard and Dodi played their way back to the top of world of bikepolo.
After the wildcard tournament was completed on Wednesday and 10 teams qualified, the Worlds kicked off on Thursday.
More than 160 players travelled to Perpignan to take part in the World Championship. It was 9 years ago that there were worlds in Europe, then in Montpellier.
On Thursday and Friday there were 5 games for each team. After 10 rounds, there was a big group from which the top 24 went on. On Saturday there was a double elimination. It was noticeable that many teams were more tense on Saturday, sometimes the euphoria had to be stopped a bit by the refs.
After many exciting games, only a few teams were left on Saturday afternoon to fight for the podium.
In the Winners Bracket Final, Rasta Rocket (Ben, Julien, Dani, Catal) played against Hot Dogs (Alejandro, Woods, Clement, Quentin). The team from Geneva with support from Barcelona played a better game and won against the French traditional team Rasta Rocket with 2:1
In the Losers Bracket Final, Mongrels(Dodi, Bouchard, Emmet, Morgan) played American Cascadia United(Julian, Mark, Branden, Dana). After a brief period of no goals, the Mongrels turned up the heat. One goal after the other was scored in the spirit of the spectators. In the end it was a 10:1 victory for the Mongrels, probably one of the highest goal differences in the whole tournament.
Rasta Rocket and Mongrels then met in the match for entry into the final and thus also for third place.
In a repeat of this yearâs Euro final, Rasta Rocket again failed to make a statement. In the end, the Euro runners-up lost 4:0 and the Mongrels entered the final.
Waiting for the final were the Hot Dogs, for whom reaching the worlds final was the biggest success of their career so far.
The first final was a 1:5 in favour of the Mongrels, so a second final was played.
As in all Elim games before, the team around Morgan was able to shift up a few gears and won the second final 6:2. Since Bouchard was injured in a crash with Ben in the previous game, the Mongrels only played with three.
In the last minute of the final, Bouchard was getting back in and defended the goal before everyone jumped off their bikes and celebrated.
Mongrels became world champions for the fourth time and are the most successful polo team in the world so far.
During the award ceremony, Tristan (Perpignan) won an Enforcer frameset for his contribution to the organisation of the Worlds and the Euros.
Catal from Montpellier was MVP and won a custom Stolen frameset.
Cascadia United was the only non-European team to reach the top 10.
Mongrels sind wieder Weltmeister
Am letzten Augustwochenende spielten sich Emmet, Morgan, Bouchard und Dodi wieder an die Poloweltspitze.
Nachdem das Wildcard Turnier am Mittwoch absolviert wurde und sich 10 weitere Teams qualifizierten, starteten die Worlds am Donnerstag.
Mehr als 160 Spielende reisten nach Perpignan, um an der Weltmeisterschaft teilzunehmen. Es ist ganze 9 Jahre her, dass es Worlds in Europa gab, damals in Montpellier.
Am Donnerstag und Freitag gab es jeweils 5 Spiele fĂŒr jedes Team. Nach 10 Runden entstand eine groĂe Gruppe aus denen die Top24 weiter kamen. Am Samstag fand eine Double elimination statt. Es war deutlich zu spĂŒren, dass viele Teams am Samstag angespannter waren. Manchmal musste die Euphorie auch durch die refs ein bisschen gestoppt werden.
Nach vielen spannenden Spielen waren am Samstagnachmittag dann nur noch ein paar Teams ĂŒbrig, die hart um die PodiumsplĂ€tze kĂ€mpften.
Im Winners Bracket Final spielten Rasta Rocket (Ben, Julien, Dani, Catal) gegen Hot Dogs (Alejandro, Woods, Clement, Quentin). Das Team aus Genf mit UnterstĂŒtzung aus Barcelona konnte ein besseres Spiel abliefern und gewann gegen das französische Traditionsteam Rasta Rocket mit 2:1.
Im Loosers Bracket Final spielten Mongrels (Dodi, Bouchard, Emmet, Morgan) gegen das amerikanische Cascadia United (Julian, Mark, Branden, Dana). Nach einer kurzen Phase ohne Tore drehten die Mongrels auf. Ganz im Sinne der Zuschauenden fiel ein Tor nach dem anderen. Am Ende war es ein 10:1 Sieg fĂŒr die Mongrels, wahrscheinlich eine der höchsten Tordifferenzen im ganzen Turnier.
Im Spiel um den Einzug ins Finale und somit auch gleichzeitig um den dritten Platz, trafen dann Rasta Rocket und Mongrels aufeinander.
In der Wiederauflage der Eurofinals aus diesem Jahr konnte Rasta Rocket auch diesmal kein Statement setzten. Am Ende verlor der Eurozweite mit 4:0 und die Mongrels zogen ins Finale ein.
FĂŒr das Finale warteten die Hot Dogs, fĂŒr die der Einzug in das Worldsfinale der bisher gröĂte Erfolg ihrer Karriere war.
Das erste Finale war am Ende ein 1:5 zugunsten der Mongrels, weshalb dann ein zweites Finale gespielt wurde.
Wie in allen Elimspielen zuvor konnte das Team um Morgan wieder ein paar GÀnge höher schalten und auch das zweite Finale mit 6:2 gewinnen. Da Bouchard sich in einem Crash mit Ben im vorherigen Spiel verletzte, spielten die Mongrels nur zu dritt.
In der letzten Minute des Finals wurde Bouchard aber nochmal eingewechselt und verteidigte das Tor, bevor alle von ihren RĂ€dern sprungen und feierten.
Mongrels wurden zum vierten Mal Weltmeister und sind das bisher erfolgreichste Poloteam der Welt.
WĂ€hrend der Siegerehrung gewann Tristan (Perpignan) einen Enforcer Rahmenset, da er sowohl bei der Organisation der Worlds, als auch bei der Orga der Euros einen groĂen Teil beisteuerte.
Catal aus Montpellier wurde MVP und gewann ein custom Stolen Rahmenset.
Cascadia United war das einzige nicht europÀische Team was die Top10 erreichte.
