and honnestly , when you crash with only your thumbs on top of the handle bars , how does it feel ? i think one good crash in that position on my fragile hands would retire me
We are talking about holding the bars. First thing first we are riding bikes. I have a stronger connection with the handle bar placing my mallet underneath. Have you ever tried to play with your mallet underneath? I have tried to play with my mallet on top. I think that having the mallet underneath gives me easy access to the front of my wheel (possibly quicker) and to the other side. I do not just have my thumb on top of my bars. I have practically my whole palm. From what I see of how toppers grab the bars I have more connection.
yeah i grab the side of the grip too i guess top or below doesnt matter then as long as your open palm firmly grab the grip and still allow for a swift play on the ball
damn i just tried under its like adding unecessary clenching since you have to retain your mallet with your last 2-3 fingers
its carpal time
but again, weak hands
I pinch it against the bar with like one/two fingers (maybe middle) will have to double check. So I am pushing up on the mallet and the bar is pushing it down. It feels very natural and minimal effort to do so. As I have it, the mallet is an after thought. Ready to access whenever I need it.

how does it behave when you pop a wheelie ? or a front wheel pivot ?
is this ultimately a debate to call out all topers for highsticking ?
The high sticking thing is part of the reason I give new players the under bar option but Iāve never felt overly threatened by experienced players who ride with it on top.
I donāt think there is a real practical difference between the two methods. Perhaps if someone has very small hands there might be a difference but Iām not even sure which way would be better.
i think its misleading new players, let em grab wherever they feel more comfyā¦ the highstixkkng rule has to be understood : it only aim at making players mindful of their play on rhe ball ( air shots / scoops )
an exemple of now regulated air play

Our latest batch of new players find it most comfortable to ride one handed and not grab the bar at all ; )
I started this thread so I could understand the full range of options so I could present them all to new players because I felt ill equipped to instruct them on alternative methods. To say suggest Iām āmisleading new playersā is laying it on a bit thick.
Having said that, it is my belief that one of the advantages of placing the mallet underneath is that it places the head low to the ground. This has several possible advantages but I concede that these are debateable. Iāll be sure to preface all future discussions with newbies about mallet placement with the phrase, āthese are my opinions and they have not passed rigorous peer reviewā to ensure that Iām not misleading them.
If you want to talk about misleading new players, letās talk about scoopingā¦ ; )
