Mallet above or below the bar?

When you ride with two hands on the bars do you place your mallet above or below your handlebar?

  • Above the bar
  • Below the bar

How would you even place the mallet below the bar? I’m confused…

I think you use more your thump to hold the bars then. Heard its sometimes easier for people with small hands…

That’s the way I do it! Can I request people post pictures of the different ways that they hold their mallet on their bar?

We have an influx of new players and I’m hoping to give them a good idea of the range of methods so they can pick the one that works for them!

it’s like pouring the milk before the cereal, only psychopaths do it.

Yeah I always stop newbies doing that, hooking their thumb on the bar. Should they fall over the bar they defo going to break the thumb.

Completly agree, with the mallet on the top you can also have more grip and can push harder …

I’m not sure I use my thumb per se. More the meaty bit below my thumb with the end of the grip pressed into my palm. As someone who uses this technique and falls of quite often I can attest to its general safety! : p

Also, I put water on my cereal…

i’m not usually this choked up on the handle but this is more or less how i carry mine. sometimes more fingers wrapped over the handlebar if i’m sprinting or need a better grip

I encourage the newbies to hold the mallet underneath. I find it the only way to have good connection with the bike. All my weight in on the handle bars at all times and the mallet is just floating in my fingers underneath. I see lots of people “punch” the handle bar (like the photo from floppy) and that seems so uncontrolled to me.

Though these are opinions. I don’t force anyone to do join the minority. Main goal is to get both hands on the bars, which seems to be a big step for newbies.

in this particular photo we weren’t in play and i was just cruising around. normally i have at least two fingers wrapped around the bar but i’ve totally had my hand slip off and cause me to crash when holding the bar this way in the past. i’m gonna try holding the mallet under the bar next pickup to see how it feels but i’m also much more aware of my grip on the bars now after that crash. i have no trouble carving and scooping the front tire around holding the mallet/bars like this but i’m always open to changing things up for better bike control

ok me and one of the guys messed with different ways to hold our mallets today at pickup and everything that wasn’t our normal way of holding the mallet felt super awkward and unsafe. i may play around with it more but it feels super natural to hold it over the grip.

Interesting topic !
To me, above the bar is the only option.
If it’s below, I would loose time to catch a ball coming in front on my bike. And playing in front of the bike is what I want !

Totally the opposite in my opinion. Your mallet is already low so it takes less time to get to the ball. How I hold it, I can just slip off the bars seamlessly with the mallet already on the ground.

As long as it is OK for you ! I guess it’s all a matter of playing style.

no one controls the ball from left to right with the mallet under the bars.

you position allow you a quick tap on the ball coming from your mallet side , but traps you physically on one side of your bike.

playing with the mallet on top of the bars gives you a choice of 360°

for exemple if you are a defensor and marking a player with the ball on your off-hand side.

i place the mallet on top of the grip but my hand is actually on the side of the grip, like open palm on the grip
