I´ve created a telegram group for easier communication! Check it out…..
On Saturday we have Morning and Afternoon group. We play round robin. On Sunday we play the remaining group games and then Top 12 Single Elim. Sadly we can´t play the OG Graz System because we don´t have lights and sun disappears too early….. 
- Start on both days at 8:30!
- Be on Time! We have a tight schedule. If your team isn´t ready you automatically lose 0-3
TBAs please let me know your Teamname. I´d like to do the Gameplan asap.
Why grouped round robin + single elim?
How about one big group and 7 rounds with single elimination. Means you will likely play more games against teams closer to your level.
I´d prefer the regular 5 rounds + double elim for austrian champs.
What was the format played last year in Linz?

We haven’t been 16 teams for years (django says never). Django and I are working on a good system. But there will be 2 groups for sure. Otherwise you’d have at least 2+ hours between your games.
Last year in Linz we were 9 teams. You can’t compare it.

We had 16 teams champs before I think.
I asked about Linz, because I was not there and wanted to know whether it was Single or Double Elimination. If not in Linz, I don´t think we ever did Single Elimination for Austrian Champs. Correct me if I am wrong.
Austrian Champs is a community event, it would be cool do have an open discussion about format rather than “we are working on a good system”.
Why not:
- Traditional grouped 5 swiss rounds + double elimination?
- Saturday 40 games * 15 min = 10 hours
- Sunday 31 games * 15 min + extra time for final games = 10 hours
or
- 5 grouped swiss rounds on saturday + 1/2 rounds sunday + top 12 single elimination
- Saturday 40 games * 15 min = 10 hours
- Sunday
1/2 extra rounds playing against similarly ranked teams from the other group = 8/16 games * 15 min = 2/4 hours
Top 12 Single Elimination 12 games * 15 min + extra time for final games = 4 hours
Just to be clear I am not opposed to single elimination but not a fan of the round robin.

We had Single elims before at least twice! I think it was 2018 and 2019 or so… I know that for sure because I played in both small finals for the 3rd place. hehe
The years after we had discussions about the format but we always sticked to yours. It was fine for me, but to be honest I am not a big fan of 5 rounds and double elim because you don´t play against each other in your group and therefore it disort the ranking.
But the swiss round system (If I remember correctly we played the same in Barcelona) is fine for me! I just don´t get what´s the problem of round robin. If we mandatory have 2 groups. You´d play every team… And imo the teams this year have a similar level
My main issue is just the light topic. we have to finish before 17:30… real time, not polo time.

Fair, 17:30 on sunday is quite a constraint. With that traditional Swiss Rounds + Double Elimination will be difficult.
It seems like the second option with 5 swiss rounds + 1/2 mixed rounds + single elimination should be possible.

Have to disagree. I think if priority is given to a good ranking, a big group makes more sense. With two groups you separate the teams that are closest to each other as per pre-seeding. These are the games that are important for a ranking. If we care about ranking we should just do a 16 team round robin… 
I fail to see the how the #8 ranked team in a group playing the #1 ranked team is valueable for the ranking. I´d rather see a match between the #8 ranked teams of both groups and the #1 ranked team of both groups.
But I am also biased because I would much rather play a team that is similarly ranked as my team, which is also why I love the top/bottom/mid groups in graz on sunday.

There were never 16 teams, closest was perhaps 13 or 14.

There are no lights, after 6pm it gets too dark to play. This means maximum 10h of play time per day.
There is no way to do a full double elim with reasonable play time and time buffer. Also finishing 5 full rounds on day 1 is highly unlikely.
The way I see it reasonable:
Saturday group A 5 rounds, group B 4 rounds
Sunday Group B 1 round, then 2 more rounds for all and 12 teams SE.
PS: I am hugely curious about the „always DE fact“.

2018 and 2019 were 15 teams + instant mix, which was played => 16 teams.

This really was/is not a difficult question to answer.
We are all Vifzacks!! Let’s go for the swiss round and then single elim. Sounds good! We just have be super on time anyway.

I would still start with two groups on Saturday to reduce waiting times and only do a big merged group on Sunday
@Jojo1312 or BPGraz could you give us a bit transparency about the registration fee? what is happening with the money? how much do you have to pay for the court?
not too complain or be annoying, but i assumed you don’t have to pay for the court and with 16 teams 20e per player for breakfast and balls sounds like a lot to me, especially when i know that it is financially not always so easy for some people with travel and accomodation costs.
anyways, thanks for taking care of the gameplan, looking forward to check out your new court.

@haski Sure! That´s a legitimate question.
First of all I didn´t expect 16 teams and therefore I was calculating with 14. But here is a rough calculation based on our last tournaments:
- 190€ for the court (if you hold an event on public places in Graz you have to pay Veranstaltungsgebühr)
- 90€ Food Saturday
- 110€ Food Sunday
- 150€ Breakfast (Both days)
- 70€ Court stuff (Volksgarten is waaaay more but we bought for Austrian champs anyway: Gaffer, zipties, pens, trashbags, toillet paper, cups,…. You always need that)
- 25€ Parking tickets + Gasoline for the transport car + trailer
- 50€ Beer as a thank you to the people who are lending us Pallets and Pavillon + tables + benches
- 110€ battery lights for the players area (I know it´s a long term investment, also for future tournaments. But it was super annoying tidy up the players area after the games. It was always dark and we did it with bike light)
- ???€ AKM - We might have to pay the music fee because we are on a public place
- ???€ Cleaning fee - We share the sports venue with the Inline speed skater and they are super picky. Possibly we have to pay for cleaning.
- 0€ Toilet - We thought we might get a Dixi (150€) but luckely the City provides one.
- 0€ Power - We thought we have to pay for it but we don´t
Last year at the Pumpquing tournament we made 90€ minus because the City told us the wrong price for the court. 
And we didn´t want collect money from the players one month after the tournament. We want to avoid that problem this time and have a puffer
Additionally we don´t have any sponsors or founding for the Austrian Champs, only the reg fee.
I hope that clear up the money situation and as always if somebody has financial troubles for accommodation please let us know! And in case we really did collect way too much reg fee we will return it of course.
