Penalty shots

At smack in the middle I saw a penalty shot and thought about why we don’t have it in Europe… I think it’s a pretty nice way after a foul on a clear scoring opportunity(The person who was in the goal needs to be goaly for the penalty shot).
Also I feel it’s very entertaining to watch
What do y’all think about it ?
Should we maybe try it for some tournaments and see how it goes?
I think it’s nicer than getting 30sec for a foul on scoring opportunity.

I agree. on a scoring opportunity, you are less incentivized to foul the offense if a 1v1 with a goalie is a consequence. The downsides are logistical. They usually take too long to explain, set up, and then reset. It tends to slow down the flow of a game which can have some implications on a team’s momentum. maybe if they were more common this wouldn’t be as big of an issue though

Question: Is it a 1 v 1 penalty shot?

If so, I wonder, don’t we lose the team play dynamicity and infinite possibilities from a 3 v 2 (one defender is out 30sec). All just to have a boring (my opinion) ego play in which rest of players and audience need to wait it out, etc.

team play > everything (again just my opinion)

edit: spelling

Yes it is a 1vs1 against the goaly
But I think it’s quite fast and don’t happen that much
If you are only allowed to go forward without big delay it’s also over quite quick
And one player out for 30sec is even worse for teamplay or?

The penalty shot rule is kind of contentious over here as well. Per the NAH ruleset if the fouled player misses the penalty shot attempt the player who committed the foul still serves a player removal, but that never gets called correctly. Yes, even for a minor penalty.

The idea, I think, is a good one and helps to bridge the gap to rectifying situations where a player is fouled with a clear scoring opportunity but not so clear that the opportunity should just be an awarded goal. The rulesets are all fluid and it’s up to us to make sure that they evolve in a way that makes sense to help grow the sport.

How would you call it in the Euro ruleset in a situation where a player is in the act of taking a shot and is fouled while there is a defender in the crease?

If it’s clear chance of goal my guess is 30sec out the guy who did the foul

We have it for the worlds 2012 in GVA, and it was abandonned after, I still don’t get why.
In the tourney, Kremin got a penalty shot against Yorgo that made a raclette stop to clear it while it was still quite unpopular, crowd went crazy.

I can’t find any team sport with ball and body contact that don’t have penalty shot:

  • handball
  • Football
  • Ice Hockey (and all other hockey variant, field hockey, roller hockey, foot hockey, etc.)
  • Basketball
    and so on.

All those other sports have a much longer game time - and in football (which is the longest game time of those) the average actual play time is below 60%. But ofcourse in football they don’t have stoppages for free throws, penalties etc.

In a game with a very short game time like HCBP it would only make sense with stoppages - but that’s still an issue for tight schedules the tournaments are usually run on.

Still, I think it makes sense to have that as a call in a clear scoring opportunity, and have it as a separate call from a 30sec penalty, with a possibility of both for the same foul.

Definitely worth testing out on some tournament(s).

Thanks for the message Quentin

I think it brings us to the question of longer games

In think in an 16min 3vs3 game a penalty shot would be fine

Maybe we should do some poll on tournaments and see what people think

If we have majority of people that like it we could maybe try it
