How to be sure that the ref isn’t drunk nor high, looks more appropriate.
I know it is a joke from Momo but adding a topic on that coulf be a good Idea.
We go hard on every topic but we are still a sport that can be played drunk or on drug …
It’s always weird (to me at least) to see a ref doing his job with his 3rd beer.
I am very guilty of drinking one beer per game reffed. Best to catch me early in the day.
Topics like “hand signals” will get added to broader ideas like " Communication skills".
Such a topic would include score keeping, hand signals, whistle blowing, calling out time remaining, eye contact, goal ref management, pre-game captain talks, talking to players while ball is in play, over-communicating, under-communicating…etc.

Hi, great project ! thanks !
sorry I can’t tick any boxes of this poll as February > April is a tough random weekends-work period for me, but if free, i’m in.
I would also very much encourage my newb / intermediate club mate, because knowing how to ref is reading and understanding the game, and understanding the game is improving your play, IMO.
if you get better at reffing, you get better at playing.
didn’t quite get the exam thing tho… would the refs be reffed ?
Great initiative!!! I would love to go as well.
We’re imagining a written exam, maybe some multiple choice questions. Fill in the blank questions etc.
Exempli gratia:
Player A has possession with advantage, player B completes a t-bone foul on player A, player A maintains possession and shoots on-frame, the ball deflects off of player C in the crease. What is the proper course of action.
A) Re-joust
B) Restart & player A’s team gets possession
C) Restart, player A’s team gets possession and player B has a 30 second penalty
D) Restart for A’s team, starting with advantage
Ideally we will create this exam with software so that you can “take the test” with your phone.
I’d love to come…

i ll come for free but will have the following request :
- wont pay 20€ subscription
- i ll run an hour long debrief on reffing for the past 15 years :
- main ref at padova euro 2013 or 14 ( only 3 ref for the whole week end , until final phases)
- head ref and supervisors of all 4 courts and ref rota + payments at montpellier worlds
- head ref at fhbpc 2024
i will break down what i think is good procedure and what doesnt work , complete re-thinking of reffing staff at sanctioned tournaments ( i dont think paying them works better)
complete re thinking on the polo game ( restarts , body contacts , individual penalties , unsportmanship conduct, definition personal space of a player)
i ll need a projector
but you probably dont want me there.
you should also get jason or levin to set up a live stream of everything.
edit: il’ also need a basket ball, would like to show a few concept feom that game and play a quick 3v3 game of basket ball and a 5v5 with the other refs
A live stream recording, if possible and for posterity, is an excellent suggestion IMO.
You bring up some very interesting points about reffing in polo Benji.
I’ve been trying to formulate a “mission statement” for the camp. Currently it is beyond the scope of the camp to attempt to make drastic modifications to the reffing laws and how we apply them.
However, we do hope that we can discuss the future of reffing as a whole. Will we have a federation of certified Refs some day? Will it remain every polo player’s responsibility to ref games?
The subjects you want to talk about will be fitting into the discussions on communication, déontologie, and Fouls.
Remark that these presentations will create opportunities for every attendee to contribute their opinions and ideas.
Here is a draft of the event schedule.
