WHBPC 2023 / WORLD HARDCOURT BIKE POLO CHAMPIONSHIP 2023

This one? Rules - North American Hardcourt Bike Polo Association

I believe all participants would welcome a quick heads up on which ruleset (euro/north america) is going to be enforced.

What makes you believe we will use the NAH ruleset? We didn’t in last worlds. It seems to be not even fully enforced in NAH tournaments, which honestly is no surprise when you take everything in it literally. It contains typos, double definitions and redundancies already pointed out over 6 years ago and communicated to the rule makers without being fixed. And most importantly, there is no amazing 2h public briefing video coming with it, like this. Despite, Euro ruleset 2023 includes also some changes that were inspired by a deep review of latest NAH ruleset, so it does definitely consider any good new idea.

So sorry for the bold statement, but we have too high standards at world championships to use anything other than the best ruleset!

I think it was a very reasonable question since there has not been any info on it so far.
It would not have surprised me if we would have played with a (slightly) amended EHBA ruleset due to request of other organizing bodies.

I think it is reasonable to let the rest of the world know that we are going to play by the EHBA Ruleset and ideally hint to the newly introduced mallet interference rule which is quite a big change in the game. Especially if we want “high” reffing standards at the worlds.
Even better add the link to the rules briefing video!

Hello everyone,

Here you’ll find general information about the event.

To ensure quick and easy communication between all players, we have set up a discussion group on Telegram. It’s intended to be a place for exchanges on the general organization, but you’ll be able to contact all participants there.

Just click on the following link: Telegram: Contact @whbpc2023

The tournament will take place at Parc des Sports, avenue Paul Alduy, 66000 Perpignan. We’ll be on site from Monday 21/08 - 8am to set up the courts until Saturday 26/08 - 9pm when they’ll be taken down. So, no matter when you arrive, you’ll always find someone from Perpignan Bikepolo. If you have bulky equipment to drop off and you want somewhere to store it, facilities will be accessible on Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd from 9am to 9pm. We will have storage space available, so please let us know what you need in advance.

The park is a public space, frequented by many athletes, but a large part of it will be reserved for us.

As usual, the city of Perpignan will provide us with lockers with showers, waste disposal and a good part of the infrastructure used during the event. We’re counting on you to respect the premises so that we can keep the trust of the local services

Beware: bikes and cigarettes will be exceptionally tolerated on site during the event, but weed is still not ready to be legalized in France

To make this event a success, we need your help throughout: to build/dismantle the courts, to help out at the orga desk, with streaming (camera, commentary) or many other miscellaneous tasks (tidying up, cleaning up, etc.).

We’ve set up a Google form to tell us what you’d like to help with. We’ll draw up a schedule of tasks and reach out to volunteers as needed.

The form is here: WHBPC 2K23 Registration for Referees/Volunteers

The previous link is also good for registering for refereeing

For this event, we’re expecting around 80 matches for the Wildcard Day (D1), 100 matches per day on the groups phase (Main Event D2 & 3) and 50 other for the bracket (D4), so we’ll need a lot of referees:

✓ For the Wildcard we’ll need players directly qualified for the Main but who will be present and willing to referee

✓ For the group days (J2 & 3), the afternoon teams will referee in the morning and vice versa.

  • ✓ For the bracket (J4), we’ll need volunteers to step forward :)*

  • Nothing really new, but no tournament without referees
*

  • We’ll be holding a refs/rules meeting on Tuesday evening, open to everyone, starting at 5pm at the field.*

Please fill in the form with at least one referee per team: WHBPC 2K23 Registration for Referees/Volunteers

The ruleset used for the tournament will be this one => EHBA Ruleset Update - News - EHBA - European Hardcourt Bike Polo Association

For meals, we provide all players with a free breakfast every morning. Paid solutions will be offered for lunch and some evenings (sandwiches, salads, pizzas, cold soups, good coffee, tea
), and there are also shops in the surrounding area where you can buy food and groceries.

What’s more, as some of the players come with their children, we’d like to provide parents with a changing room for naps and a children’s area with games next to the courts. If you have children, please contact us with their ages and let us know if you are interested.

You can find a map of our favorite places to eat, drink and dance in Perpignan on our official website: http://www.whbpc2023.com/services/a-voir-a-faire/

We’ll be in touch with you for more information on times and organization, but breakfast will be served from 8am and matches will start at 8:30am every day. Matches finish at around 8pm, and the Parc des Sports closes at 10pm.

The entire Perpignan Bikepolo team is very excited to see the world of bikepolo in its city!

Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Kisses

The Perpignan Bike Polo team

Hi everyone,

The tournament is fast approaching !

Here is a little program for next week.

Monday/Tuesday:
As mentioned in the previous email, the installation of the courts will start tomorrow, Monday August 21, at 9 a.m. at the Parc des Sports in Perpignan. If you’re around we’ll find you a little thing to do if you want to help
Some courts should be ready on Monday for the first pick-ups.

On Tuesday we put it back for the finalization of the courts and the preparation of the streaming.

On Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. there will be a meeting to discuss the rules used during the tournament. All captains are invited to participate to know some details and ask questions.
The ruleset used will be the following: EHBA-ruleset-2023.pdf and you will find an explanatory video here: youtube.com/EHBPC23 refs meeting

All match days:
To referee the Wildcard matches we will need a maximum of Main Tournament players who can ref a few matches during the day. Please fill in the following Google Doc: Volunteers&Refs or send us an email if you want to help with the refereeing.
During the Main tournament, all teams will have matches to referee (3/4 per day)!!!
We’ll set up a schedule for the rotations that we’ll communicate to you.

The matches will start every day at 8:30 a.m., after the breakfast offered to all, served from 8 a.m. Every lunchtime, L’Armari will offer something to eat (salads, gazpachos, sandwiches, vegetarian meals).

Streaming:
All courts will be equipped to broadcast all matches live.
Field A will have 3 cameras plus 1 for the commentators (open microphone to whoever wants to comment
).
Fields B, C and D will also be streamed (by Down Over Polo) but people will be needed to manage the cameras and the score display.
There is no particular schedule but if you see that nobody is behind a camera don’t hesitate to get started. You can also help with the video control if you know a little about it.
All the links to follow the streaming of the 4 courts and the live results (via a Google Sheet) will be available on time on our website: whbpc2023.com.

Wednesday:
On Wednesday, the appointment is given from 7:30 am at the courts for those who have volunteered to set it up, otherwise breakfast will be served at 8 a.m.
The Wildcard will oppose 24 teams in a single group. All teams will play 7 Swiss round matches, at the end of which, the top 10 will qualify for the Main event. Matches should end around 5 p.m.
From 6 p.m., after the matches, a small welcome punch will be offered to all players by our partner wine merchant L’Apothicaire and pizzas will be offered to you by Toucan Plaza.

Thursday/Friday:

The first two days of the Main Event will be used to establish a ranking for the main draw of the 3rd day.

After many tests and reflections, we have chosen to make two groups of 20 teams (morning/afternoon). Each group will play 5 rounds per day. At the end of the first day, the groups will be mixed (even & odd) to form 2 new groups of 20 who will play another 5 rounds.

We want each team to play as much as possible, but the schedule for these two days will be very tight. We are counting on your reactivity, as players and referees, to chain the matches.

Saturday :

At the end of the 10 rounds the 24 best teams will compete in a double elimination.

The finals will take place between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

After the closing ceremony, while we will finish dismantling the last installations, our friends from Toucan Plaza will delight us again with their pizzas, the bar will remain open and Riton will mixed his best bangers before leaving for the closing party at the Chñteau Cap de Fouste (4km from the grounds). For those who will go by bike, the shortest route is not lit and the last 1500m are a dirt road through the vineyards
Think about lights and locks for the bikes.

Ticket price will be €5 (especially for us) and be on sale at the bar throughout the tournament: facebook.com/events/bleufestival

Don’t forget to join the Telegram discussion to communicate live, ask your questions

As with the previous email, please forward the information to your teammates.

We look forward to seeing you all!
