Interesting. What failure modes does this strengthen against? I would think first against ripping the thread out of the nipple but on the few nipples I broke it was always the head that sheared off. Do the longer spokes also help with that?
It strengthens the nipple at the top of the flange by ensuring that the thread is filled at that point. My assumption is that it prevents it deforming.
I’ve never had the thread break out but in theory more thread contact might help this also.
Most of the nipples I break are usually from overtightening them in the stand as I am a hamfisted galoot. ; )
