Hello, Ben from Boston Bike Polo here. Please find below my tutorial for attaching face cages to bike helmets. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions. Please share broadly with your clubs and anyone else (just don’t sue me lol). Thanks Jordan Bowden for teaching me this method.
Also, if anyone wants to translate into Spanish or French or another language let me know and I can provide the document.
Good work putting this together and thanks for sharing! I’ve been using a similar method but with stick on velcro on the back of the helmet for many years now and never had an issue. Did find I had to stitch the velcro to the end of the straps (would peel off it it got too hot) but very easily done. Seems like a simpler solution to what is proposed here?
My two cents would be that - since I couldn’t readily get the “silver” dome screws you propose, I have used a screws and buckles for Bauer Prodigy helmet - these are sliding, not snap-on:
The only difference is that I needed to screw the posts into the dome screws backwards, to ensure a tight fit on the buckles that are fixed to helmet
I also didn’t “weave” the zip tie through the buckles, but used two per buckle - it worked well enough with my helmet’s harness.
Sounds like a good idea too :) Does the velcro piece on the back of the helmet stay put without issues?
I’ve seen lots of people using even simpler solution for chin/side straps, e.g. a softer strap/shoelace/drawstring going through the holes on the back of the helmet and simply tied or gathered with a drawstring stopper.
I personally prefer the buckles, as that seems more robust and less fiddly to open/close the cage.
Now I am looking for some way to fix/replace J-brackets to retain the cage better.
Just made the transition! Took the cage off my mycro helmet and it works perfectly. I used epoxy with screws through the snap buttons into the helmet foam. We’ll see how long it last in the sun.
